Graduate Program in American Studies
The Department of American Studies offers graduate-level courses that can be taken by students in a variety of graduate programs. Additionally, some departments recognize an American Studies minor concentration, which consists of three American Studies graduate courses (800, 878, 880, 890, and 899) and two courses from other departments related to the student’s special interests. 800 INTERPRETATION OF AMERICAN CULTURE (3). Examination of problems and methods of interdisciplinary study through analysis of classic interpretations of American culture including works of intellectual history, social history, literary history, popular culture studies, regional studies. 880 AMERICAN FILM & MEDIA HISTORY (3). Fall and spring. Allen.
890 TOPICS IN AMERICAN STUDIES (3). Advanced study of selected interdisciplinary topics in American Studies. Subject varies with instructor. Emphasis on the practice of American culture study, with some attention to theoretical issues. Fall and spring. Staff.
899 AMERICAN STUDIES THEORY AND METHODOLOGY (3). Seminar in theoretical and methodological issues. In addition to examples of scholarly practice, students will pursue their own research interests and develop reading lists for their American Studies minor examinations. Fall and spring. Staff.
