John and Joy Kasson join with Professor Emeritus Towny Ludington to honor Peter Filene on the eve of Peter's retirement from the UNC faculty. Ludington and Filene helped to found the American Studies Curriculum, and John and Joy Kasson have been teaching in it since 1971.

American Studies collaborated with the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke and North Carolina Central University to offer an experimental course in the spring of 2007. "The South in Black and White," taught by Professor Tim Tyson, brought together students from all three campuses as well as community members for an exploration of issues of race in the American South.
