Michael Lienesch teaches courses in American political thought in the political science department and is an active participant in the American studies program. His writings on early American political theory include New Order of the Ages (1988), Ratifying the Constitution (1989), and numerous articles and essays on topics such as Shays's rebellion and the origins of American conspiracy theory. His interest in the connections between religion and politics in the United States can be seen in his Redeeming America (1993) and in his articles and essays on the New Christian Right. He is now at work on a book on the American religious right of the 1920s, a study of early fundamentalism, the antievolution movement, and the Scopes "Monkey" trial. Professor Lienesch has held fellowships from the Earhart Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the National Humanities Center, and for his teaching has won a Tanner Award and been a Bowman and Gordon Gray Professor.
